How Surfmelier Works
Surfmelier is built and updated daily by Board Exchange, Europe's largest used surfboard warehouse. It combines open-access marine and weather models — wave height, period, swell direction and wind — for eight regions along the Portuguese Atlantic coast and islands. From these inputs, Surfmelier calculates a wave power index (height squared × period) and a swell quality rating, from wind chop to full groundswell, then matches conditions against wind direction relative to each spot's exposure. The result is a board recommendation for three surfer levels — beginner, intermediate and advanced — updated live as conditions change.
Surf spots covered by Surfmelier
Norte — Matosinhos
Beach break exposed to the northwest, near Porto. Consistent year-round with multiple peaks along the sand.
Peniche — Lagide / Supertubos
West-facing beach break, home to the WSL Championship Tour stop at Supertubos. Handles size well and holds swell from multiple directions.
Ericeira — Ribeira d'Ilhas
Reef break inside Europe's only World Surfing Reserve, exposed to the northwest. Long, rippable right-hand point.
Lisboa — Carcavelos
West-facing beach break close to Lisbon and Board Exchange's own warehouse in Cascais. A reliable, beginner-friendly peak.
Arrifana
West-facing reef break on the Costa Vicentina, in the southwest of Portugal. Picks up swell that misses more sheltered Algarve spots.
Algarve — Faro
South-facing beach break, sheltered from the dominant Atlantic swell direction. Best on south or southwest swells.
Açores — Santa Bárbara
North-facing reef break on São Miguel island, mid-Atlantic. Exposed to north swells that Portugal's mainland coast doesn't receive.
Madeira — Jardim do Mar
Southwest-facing reef break, historically one of Europe's premier big-wave point breaks.
