Surf Camps in Portugal by Region
Partilha
Portugal has one of the most developed surf camp scenes in Europe — over 1,800 km of Atlantic coastline, year-round waves, and surf towns that have been building around this for decades. A surf camp is more than a lesson: it's accommodation, coaching, board hire, and spot selection all taken care of, usually over a week. This is a region-by-region guide to the best options, from the north coast to the Algarve.
A surf school runs standalone lessons — you show up, surf, go home. A surf camp packages everything together: accommodation, daily coaching, equipment, meals in many cases, and transport to different breaks depending on conditions. Camps are typically week-long and designed for people who are travelling specifically to surf — or who want to immerse fully without the logistics. Prices in Portugal typically range from €500 to €1,200 per week depending on location, accommodation type, and what's included.
When to go
Portugal has surf year-round. Water temperature ranges from 14°C in winter to 22°C in late summer.
Norte — Porto & Costa Verde

Linha de Onda Surf Camp
Porto
Porto's most well-known surf camp option, with accommodation right in the city centre and daily surf sessions at Matosinhos and the surrounding beaches. The only camp in Portugal where you can combine a proper city experience with daily surf — good choice for people who want more than just waves.
Centro — Peniche

Peniche Surf Lodge
Peniche
A family-run lodge with a home-from-home atmosphere, 10 minutes from Baleal and Supertubos. The team guides you to different breaks each day depending on conditions, with daily coaching sessions and equipment hire. Video analysis is available for intermediates who want real feedback. Offers both full packages and room-only options.

The Salty Peniche
Peniche
A boutique surf camp with a boho aesthetic and a well-designed lodge set close to the best breaks in Peniche. Part of the Salty brand which also has a location in Ericeira. Well-regarded for the quality of the space and the coaching.
Centro — Ericeira

Lapoint Surf Camp Ericeira
Ericeira
The most recognised surf camp in Ericeira, perched on a cliff above the coast with 180° ocean views. Lapoint has been running camps globally for nearly 20 years, and the Ericeira location is their flagship in Portugal — daily surf lessons for levels 1 to 4, surf guiding for experienced surfers, breakfast buffet, yoga, and day trips to Sintra and local vineyards. 20 minutes walk to town, 10 minutes to the best breaks.

Rapture Surf Camp Ericeira
Foz do Lizandro, Ericeira
A well-regarded Portuguese-style house right on Foz do Lizandro beach, a few minutes walk from the town centre. Daily lessons with video analysis, licensed coaches, and afternoon free surf sessions. The camp selects spots based on conditions each day — from beach breaks to point breaks to reef lefts. A solid all-round option with a genuine surf-house feel.

The Salty Ericeira
Ericeira
Perched on a ridge above Ericeira's rooftops with sweeping views of the coast. Boho-cool interior, wicker lights, hemp rugs, and a large terrace. Founded by former pro surfer Nuno Gonçalves, the camp offers ocean-view accommodation, surfboard rentals, and a rooftop terrace. More refined than the typical hostel-based camp.
Lisboa & Cascais

Surf Cascais
Cascais / Murches
A full surf camp, school, and shop operation based in Cascais, 40 minutes from Lisbon airport. Lessons rotate between Carcavelos, Guincho, and Praia Grande depending on conditions — always the best option available on the day. The Surf Villa in nearby Murches sits 5 minutes from Guincho beach, with 6 bedrooms, a pool, outdoor bar, and BBQ. Certified by the Portuguese Surfing Federation and Tourism of Portugal. Good for groups and families.

Lisbon Surf Camp
Carcavelos / Cascais
A surf camp combining daily sessions at Carcavelos with easy access to Lisbon and Cascais. Mornings in the water, afternoons free to explore — the surf house runs packages with accommodation, lessons, yoga, and a strong community vibe. Good for solo travellers who want a social camp close to the city.

Papaya Surf Camps
Cascais
Based in Cascais, Papaya runs lessons at Guincho and Carcavelos with certified instructors, and packages surf and accommodation together for groups, universities, companies, and private travellers. A smaller, more personalised operation with a focus on beginners and first-timers in a safe, welcoming environment.
Alentejo

Lapoint Surf Camp Alentejo
Vila Nova de Milfontes
Lapoint's most remote Portuguese camp, 2 hours south of Lisbon near Vila Nova de Milfontes. Empty beaches, near-empty lineups, and dramatic Alentejo coastline. Smaller and quieter than the Ericeira camp — better for anyone who wants community without the crowds. The waves here are consistent and far less surfed than anything in Peniche or Ericeira.

Quinta Camarena
Alentejo (near Vila Nova de Milfontes)
A refined, intimate surf retreat set in a whitewashed Portuguese country house with terracotta roofs and views of the Alentejo forests — 30 minutes inland from the nearest surf beaches. Up to four surf lessons included per stay, with yoga available as an alternative when conditions aren't right. Not a backpacker hostel — more of a couples' or small-group escape.
Algarve

Tiny Whale Surf Camp
Algarve
One of the most consistently recommended camps in the Algarve — small groups, personal coaching, and access to some of the most beginner-friendly surf in Portugal. The Algarve works particularly well in winter, when the big NW Atlantic swells are too heavy for the central coast but the south-facing beaches stay manageable. Warm water and warm weather most of the year.

Endless Summer Surf House
Algarve
One of the few camps in Portugal that offers nightly rates rather than mandatory weekly packages — useful for people who want flexibility. Accommodation with optional surf lessons and rentals, in a relaxed Algarve setting. The Algarve has over 53 surf spots within reach, from mellow sandy beaches ideal for beginners to more powerful breaks for intermediates.
Most surf camps in Portugal cost between €500 and €1,200 per week, including accommodation, daily surf lessons, and equipment. Budget options in Peniche start around €500. Boutique and private retreats in the Alentejo or Algarve can reach €1,200 or more. Camps near Ericeira typically sit in the €600–900 range.
It depends on level. Beginners do best in the Algarve or at Baleal in Peniche. Intermediates and advanced surfers get more out of Ericeira — Europe's only World Surfing Reserve, with 8 world-class breaks within 4 km. The Alentejo is the best option for anyone wanting uncrowded waves and a quieter experience. Cascais is the best choice for anyone who wants surf close to Lisbon without committing to a full trip north.
Autumn (September to November) is the sweet spot for most levels — consistent North Atlantic groundswells, water still warm from summer, and fewer crowds than July and August. Summer is best for beginners: smaller, cleaner waves and warm water. Winter brings the biggest swells and suits experienced surfers. Spring is good value with fewer people and reliable conditions.
Yes — almost all surf camps in Portugal include board hire as part of the package. Most also include a wetsuit. If you already own a board suited to your level, bringing it can improve your sessions, but it's never required. Board Exchange, based in Portugal, is the largest second-hand surfboard warehouse in Europe with 250+ boards in stock if you want to buy before your trip.
Yes. Portugal is one of the best places in Europe to learn to surf. Peniche's Baleal bay, Carcavelos and Guincho near Cascais, and the Algarve beaches all have consistent, forgiving waves ideal for first-timers. Most camps run structured beginner programmes with qualified coaches, small groups, and progression-based lesson plans.
Most camps include accommodation (dorm or private room), daily surf lessons, equipment hire (board and wetsuit), and breakfast. Many also include transport to different surf spots, yoga sessions, and occasional excursions. Lunch and dinner are sometimes included but often not — check before booking.
