How does selling a surfboard on consignment work?

Consignment means you never have to deal with a buyer. You leave the board with us, we do the photography, pricing, listing, customer questions, packing and shipping, and you get paid once it sells. There is no upfront cost and no listing fee — we only earn when your board sells.

  1. Get in touch

Send us a photo and the model of your board on WhatsApp. We tell you what it is realistically worth and whether it will sell.

  2. Drop it off

Bring the board to our warehouse in Cascais. Clean, without wax. We inspect it, log the dimensions, volume and condition, and agree the asking price with you.

  3. We sell it

Your board is photographed, listed on boardexchange.pt, pushed to our Instagram and shown to buyers across Europe. We handle every question, payment and shipment.

  4. You get paid

Once the board sells and is delivered, we transfer the sale price minus our commission by bank transfer.

How much commission does Board Exchange charge?

Our commission on a surfboard is 20% of the final sale price, with a minimum of €30. On a board sold for €400 you keep €320. On a board sold for €120 the minimum applies, so you keep €90. Accessories are charged at a flat fee instead of a percentage.

What you are selling Our commission
Surfboard 20% (min. €30)
Used accessory (fins,surfbags) under €50 €10
New accessory, or used accessory worth €50 or more €15
Buyer you referred to us yourself Half the standard commission

If you find the buyer yourself, tell us before the sale that they came from you. We halve our commission and still handle the paperwork, the pick-up and the delivery of the board.

What condition does my board need to be in?

Boards should arrive clean, without wax, and watertight. A stripped, clean board photographs better and sells faster than a waxed one. If you would rather not do it, we clean the wax professionally for €10, or €15 for boards 7'6" and over.

Dings, old repairs and pressure dents are not a problem — most used boards have them, and we photograph every mark honestly and describe the condition in the listing. What we can't list is a board that is still open to water. If yours needs fixing first, we put you in touch with the shaper we work with, who takes care of the repair and deals with you directly.

Can I take my board back if it doesn't sell?

Yes. There is no lock-in. After 40 days with us you can collect your board back free of charge. If you want it back within those first 40 days, there is a €10 handling fee to cover the photography, listing and storage already done.

If a board isn't moving, we'll tell you. Usually it's the price, and a small adjustment is all it takes.

What do we accept?

We take shortboards, fish, midlengths, longboards, guns, step-ups, foamies and kids' boards, in any brand, plus surf accessories. Some things sell faster than others.

Sells fastest

  • Beginner and intermediate volume (30L and up) — the largest buyer group in Europe
  • Midlengths and fish between 6'6" and 7'6"
  • Recognised shapers and brands with a model name on the stringer
  • Boards priced 40–60% below new retail

Harder to sell

  • Very small, low-volume shortboards under 24L
  • Boards with delamination or water already in the foam
  • Unbranded boards with no model or dimensions
  • Heavy, older longboards, which are expensive to ship

Seller terms and conditions

  • Boards should be dropped off without wax — clean boards sell faster. We can professionally clean the wax for €10, or €15 if the board is 7'6" or bigger.
  • Boards must be watertight when dropped off. If a repair is needed first, Board Exchange puts the seller in touch with its partner shaper, who handles the repair and deals with the seller directly.
  • Board Exchange commission is 20% of the sale price of a surfboard, with a minimum of €30.
  • Board Exchange commission is €10 on used accessories, or €15 on new accessories and used accessories with a value equal to or greater than €50.
  • If the seller finds a buyer for their product, Board Exchange halves its commission and helps arrange the pick-up or delivery. The seller must inform Board Exchange that the buyer is a referral before the sale is completed.
  • Sellers can collect their products back free of charge after 40 days from drop-off, or for €10 if within those 40 days.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to sell a surfboard with Board Exchange?

Nothing upfront. We charge 20% of the final sale price with a minimum of €30, deducted only when the board sells. A board sold for €400 returns €320 to you. Accessories are charged at a flat €10 (used, under €50) or €15 (new, or used and worth €50 or more).

When do I get paid for my board?

We transfer your share by bank transfer once the board has sold and been delivered to the buyer. You'll get a message from us confirming the sale price and the amount going out.

Do I need to remove the wax before dropping off my board?

Yes. Clean boards photograph better and sell faster, so we ask that boards arrive without wax. If you'd rather not do it, we clean the wax professionally for €10, or €15 for boards 7'6" and over.

How long does a used surfboard take to sell?

48% of the boards in our warehouse sell within 30 days and 23% sell in the first week. Price is the single biggest factor — boards priced 40–60% below new retail move fastest. Boards that stall are almost always priced above the market, and we'll tell you when that's the case.

Can I get my board back if I change my mind?

Yes, at any time. After 40 days with us you can collect it back free of charge. Within the first 40 days there's a €10 fee, which covers the cleaning, photography, listing and storage already done.

What if I find the buyer myself?

Tell us before the sale is completed that the buyer came from you and we halve our commission. We still handle the paperwork, the payment and the pick-up or delivery of the board.

Do you accept damaged or repaired surfboards?

Boards need to be watertight. Dings, old repairs and pressure dents are fine — they're normal on used boards and don't stop them selling, and we photograph every mark and describe the condition honestly in the listing. What we can't list is a board that's still open to water. If yours needs work first, we put you in touch with the shaper we work with, who handles the repair and deals with you directly.

Do you only sell to buyers in Portugal?

No. We ship to buyers in more than 20 European countries, including Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Ireland and the Netherlands. Shipping is arranged and paid for by the buyer, so it costs you nothing as a seller and puts your board in front of a much bigger market.

Can I sell, fins and other accessories too?

Yes. We take fins, board bags and other surf gear on the same consignment basis. The commission is a flat €10 on used accessories under €50, or €15 on new accessories and used accessories worth €50 or more.

Got a board sitting in the garage?

Send us a photo and the model on WhatsApp and we'll tell you what it's worth, usually the same day. If it's a fit, drop it off at the warehouse and we take it from there.
